Travel eSIM questions, answered

What is a travel eSIM and how does it work?
An eSIM is a digital SIM you install by scanning a QR code — no plastic card and no swapping. You buy a data plan for your destination before you fly, install it in minutes, and switch it on when you land. Your home number stays on your physical SIM for calls and texts.
Will an eSIM work on a cruise ship?
Only on the open sea if it supports maritime networks — and right now GigSky is effectively the only eSIM that connects mid-ocean. In port you can usually switch to a cheaper local or regional eSIM. Our cruise guide explains exactly when to use which.
How does Roampass make money?
We earn affiliate commissions when you buy an eSIM through our links, at no extra cost to you. Crucially, commission never influences our rankings — those are based only on value to travellers. Read our ranking methodology and affiliate disclosure.
How much data do I actually need?
For light use (maps, messaging, email) about 0.3 GB/day is plenty; moderate use (social, browsing) around 0.7 GB/day; heavy use (streaming, video calls, hotspot) 1.5 GB/day or more. When in doubt, an unlimited plan removes the guesswork. Most of our hub pages include a data estimator.
